BRUSSELS, June 6 (Xinhua) -- The man suspected of radicalizing the author behind the terrorist attacks in Liege in Belgium was arrested Wednesday by special intervention forces, according to the federal prosecutor.

Fouad Bennane, an individual suspected of having radicalized Benjamin Herman while they both served sentences in prison, was arrested in Ensival (Verviers).

The suspect was wanted by police for breaking the terms and conditions of his parole set on May 22 by not returning to prison as ordered by the court, said the federal prosecutor.

Bennane, who has several convictions for acts of theft and violence, is one of 25 "radicalized" people in the municipality of Verviers in Liege.

His name appears in the list of Ocam (Coordinating Unit for Threat Analysis) and on the recruitment list of ISIS, according to newspaper l'Avenir.

Ongoing investigations aim to determine whether he is one of the people who radicalized Herman when he was behind bars.

The intervention to seize the suspect went briefly out of hand after a police officer was shot by a firearm after an accidental shooting, the federal prosecutor's office said.

Aged 39, Fouad Bennane has countless criminal offenses to his name and his past background spells a long history of violence. Having worked previously as a pastry chef, he was sentenced to six months in prison in 2002 and eight months in 2005, each time for assault and battery, reports the Belgian newspaper La Libre.
