YANGON, June 7 (Xinhua) -- The Myanmar police have arrested a key suspect behind an illegal drug haul seized by Malaysian authorities last month, Myanmar News Agency reported Thursday.

Maung Maung alias Yassin, 44, was apprehended on Tuesday following a tip-off that the suspect had left Pyin Oo Lwin for Mandalay by car from the Top Light Travel Service.

Three Malaysian and three Myanmar citizens were detained in an initial raid in Malaysia along with 1,187 kilos of methamphetamine and 750 grams of heroin found stashed under food products in a container from Nioe Guy Clearance Service Agency.

The investigation by Myanmar police force led to the capture of the first suspect and extraction of vital information pointing to Maung Maung who had been on the run since May 30.

Maung Maung was found to have contacted U Kaung Trading Company to send the cargo to Malaysia.

The Myanmar police also seized a Toyota Lexus owned by Maung Maung on June 3 which was parking under an overpass in Tammwe, Yangon.

Further investigation led to a discovery that Maung Maung and his accomplices had opened bank accounts in two private banks with a balance of 2.8 billion kyats ( 2.07 million U.S. dollars) which was frozen by the police.
