KAMPALA, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Five people died in a road accident on Thursday evening in the central Ugandan district of Masaka, a police spokesperson said on Friday.

Lameck Kigozi, the southern regional police spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone that the fatal accident occurred after a sedan car had a head-on collision with a mini bus at Kirumba village along the Masaka-Mbarara Highway at around 18:45 hours, local time.

At least four of the deceased who were travelling in the sedan car were from the same family. The fifth person who is yet to be identified was in the minibus .

Kigozi said preliminary investigations show that there was reckless driving by the driver of the sedan car who attempted to overtake at a point where she had not clear visibility of oncoming traffic.

The sedan car was heading to Mbarara from Masaka while the minibus was from the opposite direction.

Uganda registers at least 20,000 accidents with over 2,000 deaths each year, making it one of the countries with the highest road accident fatality rates in the world, according to police statistics.
