SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, July 9 (Xinhua) -- A woman was stabbed to death by unidentified men, who barged inside her house in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said on Monday.

The woman was stabbed in throat late Sunday night at village Shahgund of Hajin in Bandipora district, about 32 km north of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Police suspect the attackers to be militants.

"Last night unidentified militants barged into the house of Abdul Majeed Dar here and stabbed his wife Shakeela with sharp edged weapon leaving her critically injured. Though she was shifted to hospital in Srinagar, she succumbed there on arrival early today," a senior police official posted in Bandipora told Xinhua.

Dar is affiliated to region's pro-India Peoples Democratic Party.

Reports said the attackers had come for Dar to kidnap him, however his wife resisted.

So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Militants in the region usually target families and individuals for their possible links with police and defense agencies. Even people having associations with pro-India political parties and police are targeted at times.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
