DHAKA, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh's inflation decreased to 10.89 percent in December from 11.38 percent in November, according to the latest data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
The Consumer Price Index released by the BBS showed that food inflation eased slightly to 12.92 percent in December from 13.80 percent in the previous month.
The fall was driven by a continued drop in the price of winter crops, as well as the price of non-food items.
Inflation for non-food items edged down to 9.26 percent in December from 9.39 percent in November, the data showed.
However, the country's average inflation surged to 9.73 percent in the fiscal year 2023-24 (July 2023-June 2024), much higher than the budgetary target of 7.5 percent for the fiscal year.
In the previous 2022-23 fiscal year, overall inflation was 9.02 percent.
The inflation rate, announced at 6.5 percent for the 2024-25 fiscal year during the budget proposal on June 6, 2024, has been revised to 6 percent. ■
