ADEN, Yemen, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The pro-government Yemeni forces managed on Thursday to shoot down a drone belonging to the Shiite Houthi rebel group in the southern port city of Aden, a military official told Xinhua.

The official said on condition of anonymity that the Houthi fighters used an Iranian-made drone and tried to launch a missile attack against the headquarters of the Saudi-led coalition in Aden.

The Saudi-backed Yemeni air forces aborted the Houthi drone attack and destroyed the drone successfully, the source said.

Other security sources based in Aden confirmed to Xinhua that the drone launched by Houthis shelled the headquarters of the Saudi-led coalition forces in Aden's district of Buraiga.

About two missiles were fired by the drone on the Saudi-led coalition base but no casualties were reported, according to the security sources.

The Houthis claimed responsibility for launching the aerial bombing and threatened to carry out more attacks against the Saudi-led coalition forces operating in Yemen.

The coalition intervened in the Yemeni conflict in March 2015 to roll back the Shiite Houthi rebels and support the internationally-recognized government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

The rebels have seized control over much of the country's north since September 2014, including the capital Sanaa, and forced Hadi and his government into exile in Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia.

The war has killed more than 10,000 Yemenis, mostly civilians, and displaced 3 million others, triggering one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
